It’s not just what you eat that matters, but also when you eat it. New research shows that the timing of meals can affect the body’s energy expenditure, appetite and fat storage patterns. Eating all the food you need for the day within 10 hours of breakfast, if possible, provides a healthier body, according to a study conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. That means those who have breakfast at eight in the morning should have eaten at least at six in the evening.

According to the study published in the journal Cell Metabolism, those who eat four hours late are more hungry, their body burns calories at a slower rate, and they are more likely to store fat.

The researchers conducted the study on 16 overweight people. They were divided into two groups according to two schedules of eating early and eating late in the day. They were given the same type of food. They were asked to record information regarding their hunger. The researchers collected their blood samples, body temperature, energy expenditure and samples of body fat cells.

Lower levels of the hormone leptin were observed in late eaters. It is a hormone that helps control appetite and makes you feel full. Late eaters burned 60 fewer calories than early eaters, the researchers said. Another study found that people who ate all their meals within 10 hours had lower levels of bad cholesterol, better mental health, and less alcohol consumption.
