Study: Social media use linked to poor mental health in teens

A new study shows that social media use is closely related to poor mental health of adolescents during their adult years.

The study showed – according to what was published by the technical website “The Verge” today, Wednesday – that adolescents who used social media frequently in those periods scored lower on measures of life satisfaction following one year.

Many researchers say that platforms such as Instagram and Tik Tok may not be entirely bad for all teens, but they are not entirely good either, and can cause documented problems with self-image, but the effect is different for some teens at times. This helps them socialize and build relationships; For others at other times, it may be detrimental to their self-esteem.

Adolescence is a time of massive cognitive, biological and social change, said Amy Urban, a psychologist who heads the Digital Mental Health Program at the University of Cambridge. These changes also interact with social media in very exciting ways, and there is likely to be a great deal of variance.
