A study reveals that people who engage in physical activity tolerate pain better than the sedentary population.

It’s not just between men and women that there is a difference in pain tolerance. The distinction is also made on the habits of everyone, independent of their gender. A few days ago were thus published, in the scientific journal PLoS One, the results of a study titled “Longitudinal relationships between habitual physical activity and pain tolerance in the general population”.

Pain tolerance: a two-stage study conducted in Norway

The team of doctor Anders Arne, of the hospital of Tromsø, in Norway, was interested in the data of 10,732 inhabitants of this same city. The researchers focused on two periods, 2007-2008 and 2015-2016.

The water immersion test

The subjects were asked to immerse their hand and arm in water maintained at 3°C. The purpose of the experiment, in a broad sense, was to measure the pain resistance of these volunteers. The latter, meanwhile, had to strive to stay as long as possible in the liquid, knowing that a limit of 120 seconds, or two minutes, was imposed.

Increased resistance during follow-up for a category of subjects

It appeared that people who said they were physically active stayed longer in the water, unlike subjects who recognized their strong sedentary lifestyle. Moreover, the volunteers with regular physical activity even improved their resistance to pain during the follow-up. The authors of the study concluded that there was a serious way to prevent or reduce chronic pain, without going through drug treatment.
