There are more people playing video games than you might think. A new study shows that free games aren’t free for most people. While many still consider gaming a niche hobby, a new report shows that 62% of Americans over the age of 18 play video games.
Comscore’s State of Gaming 2024 report shows that millennials are the most likely to play video games, with 49% of gamers falling into this age group. Some of the most interesting parts of the study show the rise in popularity of free-to-play games.
Free-to-play and live-service games currently dominate the industry, with more companies trying to use the profitable business model. However, many of these games fail, with only a few games like Fortnite, Roblox, and Call of Duty representing the majority of players.
Although the games themselves cost nothing to download and play, they make money by offering in-game microtransactions for things like battle passes and character skins. It was often thought that the majority of the profits came from a few “high rollers,” a small number of people who spend large amounts of money on these games.
However, the report shows that 82% of gamers spent money on in-game microtransactions in 2023, meaning that more than half of adults overall spent money on free-to-play games.
The survey indicates that free games are not actually free for the vast majority of people who play them.
