Adversity and life’s trials forever change how the brain works. This surprising conclusion was made by scientists from Radboud University, the material was published in the journal MedicalXpress.
Neuroscientists have done a study – they have studied the impact of life’s adversity on patterns in the brain – and have identified associations that can predict the development of mental disorders.
So, an experiment was conducted with the participation of regarding 170 people, while information regarding them was collected throughout their lives. The researchers specifically focused on factors or events that have a negative impact on health, including maternal smoking during pregnancy, complications during childbirth, abuse, or a serious accident. In addition, experts determined the structure of the brain of volunteers using scanning. It was carried out at the age of 25 and 33 years. Then, with the help of artificial intelligence, links were found between negative factors (adversity) and patterns in the brain.
It has been established how the brain normally reacts to adversity in order to determine when this reaction is abnormal. As a result, widespread morphometric changes in the brain were identified, with partially specific features depending on the type of adverse effect.
The scientists now hope their findings might eventually help in the early detection of mental disorders.
