The results of a recent study on rape in Senegal carried out in five regions (Dakar, Thiès, Kédougou, Ziguinchor and Diourbel) accuse women of being responsible because of their (sexy) attire.

The survey reveals that rape victims are considered partly responsible for what happens to them. A majority of respondents believe that women are partly responsible for the rapes they suffer.

The reasons given by the respondents are mainly related to their dress considered “sexy” (62.15%) as well as their “behaviour” (64.28%). According to the study, this vision is shared by both men and women. Indeed, as many men as women consider that the victims bear some responsibility for their own fate because of their behaviour.

However, among those who point to the sexy outfits of the victims, there is a higher proportion of women (56.45%) than men (51.20%). The results of this study were presented during a workshop organized by the “Dafadoy” collective, an initiative engaged in the fight once morest violence once morest women and children.
