Study indicates that propolis improves immunity of people living with HIV

One unpublished study made by Brazilian scientists revealed that propolis can improve the immunity of people who live with the virus HIV. In this sense, the resin produced by bees can modulate the immune system even in viruses that target the body’s defense cells.

José Maurício Sforcin is from the Biosciences Institute of the São Paulo State University (Unesp) of Botucatu, research coordinator and commented:

It was already known that propolis is a powerful anti-inflammatory and also has an antioxidant action, but this is the first time that it has been shown that it also helps people living with HIV

The study was carried out with a group of volunteers and found that propolis reduced the concentration of malondialdehyde. That is, a substance that indicates the imbalance in cell metabolism, which is called oxidative stress. This condition causes a loss of defense once morest free radicals and often grows in people living with HIV.

It was even possible to observe an improvement in the fight once morest these free radicals in this research, which was published in the scientific journal Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy. The group of volunteers was made up of people undergoing treatment with antiretrovirals, asymptomatic and with the virus undetectable for at least three months.

The people who participated in the study did not undergo changes in eating habits or physical activities. Therefore, the only difference was the use of propolis in capsules 500 mg daily. As a result, there was a reduction in levels of markers associated with inflammation and oxidative stress.

In total, there were 40 participants, divided into half as described above and the other half also asymptomatic, with the same count and CD4 and use of antiretrovirals, but without consumption of propolis. Karen Tasca is a biologist, first author of the work supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and commented:

With this in mind, we believe that propolis can help reduce chronic inflammation and contribute to preventing the development of comorbidities, such as diabetes and cancer, which are more frequent in people living with HIV than in non-infected people. And, in this way, help to contain the premature aging that affects the carriers of the virus
