One new report released by Communications Workers of America (CWA) indicates a persistent lack of diversity nas Apple leadership positionsraising concerns regarding the company’s hiring and promotion practices.
While Apple’s metrics reflect some progress in inclusive hiring, the survey reveals a significant drop in diversity as employees move up the corporate ladder.
Data from 2014 to 2021, collected by Apple and analyzed by the CWA, exposes a disproportionate representation of white candidates in management positions, while people of color, particularly blacks and Hispanics, are more likely to hold lower positions.
According to the survey, Apple’s efforts to diversify its workforce led to a 70.1% increase in Black hires and a 93.1% increase in Hispanic hires.
Yet these gains have not translated into proportional representation at the highest levels within the company. White employees continue to dominate leadership roles, pointing to systemic barriers that impede career advancement for people of color.
The former retail manager at an Apple Store likened a chance for promotion within the company to solving a puzzle, something that for him would be akin to playing a game. Wordle:
You just have to guess the right letter and if you don’t get it right, you don’t advance, so you try once more, but the word changes.
Sidney Loformer employee of an Apple Store in New York, told the TechCrunch that decisions related to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives diversity, equity, and inclusionor DEI) are often lost or diluted as they move from the corporate level to retail stores.
Meanwhile, Apple Store employees across the United States are moving toward unionization. The first successful case happened in a store in Marylandand it is believed that more stores will be able to follow suit.
Apple, for now, has yet to comment on the CWA report or the growing unionization efforts. Now, we can’t wait to see how she addresses these concerns and how she works towards a more inclusive and equal future.
