In a study published by the industry portal, called Special Industry and Energy Survey, it was pointed out that among the high voltage companies that currently operate in the captive market, 56% expressed interest in migrating to the free market from 2024. On the other hand, the report points out that 7% stated that they do not consider the possibility of changing , while 37% declared ignorance regarding the proposal from the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME). The study states that these results suggest the need for a broad discussion in the industrial sector, indicating that companies are at different stages of evaluation or lack information regarding migration.
Regarding the MME proposal, the study relates companies’ interest in the free energy market with ordinance no. 50/2022, published in August 2022 by the MME, which establishes the possibility of migration to the free energy market from the 1st January 2024 for all “Group A” or high voltage consumers.
The study further establishes more data on the subject, by segmenting the responses by company size, pointing out that 59% of large companies, 61% of medium-sized companies and 48% of small companies indicated the possibility of migrating to the free market. However, the report notes the high percentage of companies that were unable to provide a definitive answer. Furthermore, it is possible to verify in the published document that the lack of knowledge or lack of positioning indicates that the dialogue on migration to the free market needs to be expanded to ensure a more complete and informed understanding on the part of companies.
José Antônio Valente, director of the equipment rental franchise Franquias Trans Obra states that the decision to migrate involves several factors, and it is interesting to see that many companies are actively evaluating this possibility. However, the significant number of companies that declared ignorance or uncertainty regarding migration draws attention. “This highlights the importance of a broader and more enlightening dialogue in the industrial sector, so that all conversations and debates can benefit the sector as a whole, promoting informed decisions on the path to the free energy market and for companies to take the decision that is best suited to each company’s business strategy.”
The study also provides a conclusion on the importance of the debate on the topic, stating that this dialogue must include efforts to disseminate clear information regarding the opportunities and challenges associated with migration.
