Study: “Combi-Pill” and obesity highly dangerous

Healthier Lifestyle

According to the review study, obesity means a 1.7-fold increased risk of venous embolism for women of childbearing age. In the case of obesity, it increases by a factor of 2.4. However, statistics have shown that the concomitant use of estrogen/progestin-containing “pill” preparations lead to twelve times more venous thromboembolism. For women with obesity, this risk doubles once more, i.e. 24 times.

Of course, losing weight would be the first important measure to reduce the root problem. When it comes to contraception, methods without an increased risk of thrombosis should be considered. For study author Rosano, however, it is also regarding a generally healthier lifestyle in terms of cardiovascular diseases. “Obese women who take oral contraceptives are vulnerable to VTE events and should take other measures to prevent cardiovascular disease altogether: in any case, stop smoking and increase physical activity.”
