Professional music-making requires physical and mental resilience. Professional musicians and music creators work in a rapidly changing environment in which music is created, produced, distributed, consumed and marketed in completely new ways. This new landscape puts additional pressure and stress on professional musicians, demanding a range of skills (e.g. digital and entrepreneurial) alongside their virtuosity and skill to stay afloat. Recent crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, have exacerbated this situation. This new reality raises serious concerns for the health and well-being of musicians and music creators in the EU.
In response to this challenge, the European Commission commissioned the study entitled “The Health and Wellbeing of Professional Musicians and Music Creators in the EU” as part of its Music Moves Europe initiative (preparatory action 2019). The study shows that health and well-being are threatened by a range of risk factors and that action is needed on many fronts.
