A study claims that a new ocean is being formed within the continent of Africa, which will cause it to split into two halves, according to a study “The News Times”.

In their new study, geologists stated that the new ocean is formed as a result of a 35-mile-long rift that appeared in the Ethiopian deserts in the distant region in 2005, suggesting that it would be “the beginning of a completely new sea.”

The consensus, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, is that “rift formation is driven by processes similar to those on the ocean floor.”

The tectonic plates of Africa and Arabia collided in the desert and gradually separated regarding 30 million years ago.

The same movement also led to the formation of the Red Sea, but this only happens at the rate of a fraction of an inch per year. Knowing that an inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters.
