Two in ten Brazilian teenagers who become mothers do not know how to avoid pregnancy, according to a study published this month by researchers from the Adolescentes Mães project, at Hospital Moinhos de Vento, in Rio Grande do Sul.

The researchers interviewed 1,177 mothers from the five regions of the country between August 2022 and May 2023 treated in selected hospitals.

They were divided into two categories: adolescents aged 10 to 19, representing 49.5%, and adults aged 20 to 29, representing 50.4% of those interviewed. Of the youngest group, 2.12% of participants were mothers between 10 and 14 years of age.

The average age of first sexual intercourse for teenage mothers was 14 years old, with the first pregnancy at 16. Among women who became mothers in adulthood, the average age of first sexual intercourse was 16 years old, with pregnancy at 22.

Around 64% of teenagers said they had become pregnant unintentionally, and 20.4% did not know how to avoid pregnancy. On the other hand, 58% of adults interviewed said they got pregnant because they wanted to be mothers.
