Anime specialty channel AT-X will launch a new video distribution service “AT-DX” on March 23rd. With this service, the anime introduction program “STUDIO HISASHI with Anime”, in which GLAY’s HISASHI (G) serves as the navigator, will be distributed once a month.

HISASHI is known for his deep knowledge of subcultures including anime. Voice actor Endo uploaded videos of him playing anime songs such as “Lucky Star”‘s opening theme “Take it! Sailor Fuku” and “Osomatsu-san’s” opening theme “Hanamarupippi wa Yoiko Dake” on the internet. He has also provided songs for Yurika, Suzuko Mimori, and Emi Ogata.

“STUDIO HISASHI with Anime” is a program in which HISASHI offers viewers an opportunity to encounter new anime works. HISASHI welcomes artists and creators who have been involved in anime as guests and talks deeply regarding anime. The memorable first Alex Reed is TERU, who has spent many years together as a member of GLAY. They have a lot of anime talk on the show, and even have sessions just for the two of them.

On Music Natalie, we sneak into the recording site of the program’s first episode. She spoke to HISASHI and TERU regarding their impressions of the recording and their feelings toward anime works.

“STUDIO HISASHI with Anime” #1 recording report

At the end of January, the first recording of “STUDIO HISASHI with Anime” began at a studio in Tokyo. HISASHI, who is serving as a navigator for an anime introduction program for the first time, humbly says, “Don’t get your hopes up! I don’t know much regarding it,” but he gears up right from the recording and shares his thoughts on anime creators such as Hayao Miyazaki, Mamoru Oshii, and Hideaki Anno. Rather than being affected by it, it’s trauma! I’m under a spell!” he explodes. TERU, who was invited as the first Alex Reed, appeared at the studio full of anime love, laughing and asking, “Is it okay if I’m a relative for the first time?” HISASHI’s love of anime is widely known, but TERU also loves anime and manga. “Among the members of GLAY, it’s like the anime/games team,” says HISASHI.

“STUDIO HISASHI with Anime” will not only feature episodes related to anime, but also feature the careers of guests, and have in-depth conversations. This time, HISASHI and TERU look back on the history and episodes of GLAY, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. When TERU said, “When the four of us get together, there’s nothing but laughter,” HISASHI laughs and says, “Even during tour rehearsals, we just talk all the time.” Even though 30 years have passed since their debut, the relationship between the four members of GLAY and their cheerful atmosphere have not changed at all. During a break in recording, a staff member asked TERU, “Have you been good friends for 30 years?”, and TERU replied, “Forever!”, as if it was a matter of course. However, GLAY was once in danger of disbanding. The two look back fondly on 1999, which they say was “a time when being in a band wasn’t fun.”

The talk theme was, “Who in the past 30 years has thought, ‘I can’t beat this artist?'” The vocalist of a certain band that will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2021 and has been with GLAY for a long time shared an amazing story. Jump out of TERU. Additionally, the program will feature a “Memories Liner Notes” corner where guests will introduce things they treasure. What TERU brought to the studio was a memento of his time with the producer, which is essential when talking regarding GLAY’s history. HISASHI was very excited regarding the item being shown to the media for the first time, saying, “This is precious!”

Until now, GLAY has been in charge of many anime theme songs, and among them, “Ace of Diamond” includes “Dashoure! Mirai”, “HEROES”, “Sora ga Aozora de A ni ni”, “Hajimari no Uta”, “Ryuusei no Uta”, and “Ryuusei no Uta”. HOWL” is available. TERU, who produced all five songs, speaks fondly regarding his journey with “Ace of Diamond” on the program. Among GLAY’s anime theme songs, HISASHI wrote the opening themes for “Kurumukuro”, “Destopia” and “Supersonic Destiny”. HISASHI reveals how he translated the atmosphere of the work into the song, and the production episode at the time.

In the corner where guests present their recommended anime to HISASHI, “Hisashi ni Hoshi★ My Favorite Anime,” TERU will introduce an anime he encountered in his childhood that was based on boxing. This work was selected because “I thought HISASHI wouldn’t have gotten into it.” However, TERU ends up being enthusiastically praised by HISASHI, saying “This anime has a great ending!” TERU mightn’t help but laugh as he said, “I didn’t expect you to know this much…”

The valuable session corner between HISASHI and guests is also one of the highlights of “STUDIO HISASHI with Anime”. This time, two anime theme songs provided by GLAY were performed: “Sora ga Aozora de Aru ni ni” and “Destopia.” Check out the program to see the session between the two with Aun’s breath.

HISASHI&TERU interview

I want to know more regarding anime

──The recording has just finished, how was it?

HISASHI We stayed the same as usual (lol).

TERU: I almost ignored the script.

──HISASHI is famous as a musician with a deep knowledge of anime, but TERU is also quite an anime fan.

TERU That’s right. When I was interviewed with the voice actors of “Ace of Diamond,” they brought up various stories regarding old anime, and they said, “You’re surprisingly knowledgeable.” But for my generation, it’s not that we know much regarding anime, it’s that in the past it was the only form of entertainment we had. It was just fun and I watched it all the time.

HISASHI: Hakodate, where we lived, was in the countryside, so there weren’t many TV channels.

TERU. Aomori Broadcasting came on by chance and Kamen Rider was playing at 6am.

HISASHI: “Honshu is amazing!” (laughs)

──Hisashi-san, how did you feel when you were offered the role of MC for an anime introduction program?

HISASHI I like to touch on things that I don’t know yet. I want to get closer to genres of anime that I’m not familiar with, and I’m curious regarding how they came up with this kind of work. I wanted to learn more regarding anime, so I immediately accepted the offer, saying, “If it’s okay with me!”

HISASHI

TERU I was surprised that you were going to do something new once more. Lately, I’ve been thinking that television has become one of the bases for HISASHI’s activities. When I see HISASHI appearing on variety shows, I think it’s really amazing.

──From your point of view, TERU, is there ever a moment when you realize that HISASHI really likes anime?

TERU There have been many for a long time. When I was traveling by bus during tours, I would often see him reading all volumes of the manga with the entire volume at his feet.

HISASHI There it was. Nowadays, I buy books on Kindle, but when I didn’t have a tablet, I used to buy all the volumes of “NARUTO” on a site called “Mangazenkan.com.” At that time, all the members were hooked on “Kingdom of Ambition.”

TERU Ah!

HISASHI That is amazing! Our guitarist, DAITA, introduced us to us and said, “It’s interesting.” TAKURO was especially into it.

The genres that the “GLAY Anime/Game Team” is in charge of are…

──During the recording of the program, the words “GLAY Anime and Game Team” were mentioned. You said that the two of you work in completely different genres, but what genres do you each work on in the GLAY anime/game team?

TERU When it comes to games, I usually play FF (FINAL FANTASY) or MMO (online games where multiple players can participate at the same time), but HISASHI is always playing Genshin in his dressing room. . The genres are different in that respect.

HISASHI That’s right.

TERU: When it comes to anime and manga, I really love Weekly Shonen Jump series.

HISASHI TERU is like “Jump” and I’m like “Young Sunday” (lol).

TERU Ahahaha. It’s easy to understand.

HISASHI But I was also reading “Jump,” and I was also playing “FF.” However, from there my hobbies and tastes became more and more profound (lol).

TERU (laughs). Even among the Jump series, I like sports-based anime.

──Is there any anime that started your love of sports?

TERU It’s “Star of the Giants.” I watched that every day.

HISASHI I was watching it too. After all, if I don’t have entertainment, I’ll just watch anime (lol). However, “Star of the Titans” is more of a human drama than a sports anime.

TERU: That’s certainly true.

If HISASHI TERU’s favorite anime genre is “sports roots”, then I guess I’m a “chuunibyou” fan. I myself feel like I’m suffering from something that hasn’t healed yet (lol).

TERU Hahahaha.

HISASHI I talked regarding Hideaki Anno in the recording earlier, and I can really understand the feel of Anno’s work. Things that Mr. Anno has always had, such as his relationship with his father… It’s the same with Hayao Miyazaki, but it’s like he himself becomes the anime and is expressed. When I look at their works, I feel a great deal of sympathy. I think that anime works are the lives of the creators.
