Students from all over the US join in support of Gaza

NEW YORK (AP) — Protests once morest the war between Israel and Hamas have already generated friction at universities across the United States and escalated yesterday when several institutions encouraged their students to take classes remotely, and dozens of students faced charges following posting tents on campuses and ignoring requests from authorities to leave.

The protests began months ago but intensified following 100 pro-Palestinian protesters who camped out on the Columbia University campus in Manhattan were detained last week.

Tensions at Columbia remain high and some students are afraid to come to campus, so officials said the University will adopt a hybrid learning system for the rest of the semester.

Problems

At many universities, there are regarding two weeks left in the semester and there have been problems handling the protests, which have spread throughout the United States.

Police reported that 133 protesters were arrested the day before yesterday followingnoon following protesting at New York University, and that all were released with summonses to appear in court on charges of causing disorder.

John Beckman, a spokesperson for the University, stated that the institution would resume classes yesterday.

In Connecticut, police arrested 60 protesters, including 47 students, at Yale University the day before yesterday when they refused to leave a camp at Beinecke Plaza.

Yale Chancellor Peter Salovey said protesters rejected an offer to end the demonstration and meet with the board of trustees.

After several warnings, school officials determined the situation was no longer safe, so police dismantled the camp and made arrests.

In the North Central region, protesters set up more than 30 tents in the central part of the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus, known as the Diag.

And nine University of Minnesota anti-war protesters were arrested yesterday when police broke up an encampment a couple of hours following it was set up in front of the library.

On the west coast, California Polytechnic University in Humboldt announced that its campus would be closed until today following several protesters occupied a building the night before last.

Classes will be held remotely, the University said on its website.

Since the start of the war, colleges and universities have struggled to balance security and the right to free expression.

Many have long tolerated protests but now exercise stricter discipline.

The protests have generated clashes between students; Pro-Palestinian students demand that their institutions condemn Israel’s attack on Gaza and disassociate themselves from companies that sell weapons to Israel.

For their part, some Jewish students say that much of the criticism once morest Israel has led to anti-Semitism.
