Higher education institutions have been working for several years now to support students in their school life but also to allow them to have access to the care they need.

As such, university health services (SSU) were created in 2019 within universities. Very useful, especially during the Covid-19 period, since January 1, they have been extended to all students (no longer just those enrolled in university training), and become student health services (SSE).

What do they offer? What can we access? We take stock.

A plethoric offer

Present in all higher education establishments, the main mission of the SSEs is to support students in matters of health and health prevention.

They thus cover the areas of mental health, disability, sexual health, prevention and fight against addictions, nutrition and dietetics, and vaccination.

These structures are generally made up of nurses who ensure medical permanence, direct students to the competent medical services according to their needs and manage minor emergencies.

There are also temporary doctors, psychiatrists, tobacco specialists, psychologists, etc.

Complete health checks

Thus, all student health services are authorized to offer examinations, most of the time free or applying third-party payment (you only pay the mutual part if you do not have complementary health insurance).

Students can get vaccinated, consult to quit smoking, talk about their addictions to alcohol or drugs, find support for the blues or depression, get tested for sexually transmitted infections or get a prescription. for emergency contraception.

But it is in the psychological domain that the SSEs go all out! Indeed, students were particularly weakened during the various confinements linked to the Covid-19 crisis. According to the student union Fage, 30% of them confessed to having regularly had suicidal thoughts during these difficult times.

And the current economic situation does not help by plunging young people into a condition of incredible precariousness. Within the SSEs, students can therefore have access to well-being services, meditation, breathing or sleep improvement activities, sophrology and dietetics consultations.

Adapt your curriculum to your disability

These health services also take care of students with disabilities. They support them in their administrative procedures and inform them of their rights. Indeed, these students can request accommodations in the monitoring of their schooling or during exams.

This personalized help allows them to obtain increased composition times during written, oral and practical tests, but also to have access to technical or computer equipment, to benefit from assistance or from a specialist in a of communication or to have a presentation of the exam subjects adapted to their handicap.

Universities also now offer the programme Aspie-Friendlywhich promotes the inclusion of students with autism spectrum disorders.
