During a film screening, vocational students applaud as the number of Jews murdered during the Nazi dictatorship is shown. Hesse’s culture minister is horrified. The public prosecutor’s office is investigating charges of sedition.
A group of vocational students applaud as a film comes to an end in a cinema in Wiesbaden. You see the last seconds of the drama “The Wannsee Conference” – and applaud just at the moment when the sentence appears: “Six million Jews were murdered under the rule of the National Socialists.”
The “Wiesbadener Kurier” first reported on the allegedly anti-Semitic incident that occurred on January 30th. In response to WELT’s request, the Wiesbaden public prosecutor’s office confirmed investigations that there was initial suspicion of incitement according to Section 130 of the Criminal Code.
The investigation is initially underway once morest unknown persons. A press spokesman said that the personal details of the suspected students were “not yet known”. But the names are known and will be transmitted.

Michael Ashelm, press spokesman for the Hessian Ministry of Culture, also confirmed the incident to WELT. The allegations are therefore directed once morest a group of six young people who attended the film screening in the “Caligari Filmbühne” together with around 55 classmates and three teachers.
According to the ministry, the credits should only have started following the reference and the applause. It is therefore unlikely that the applause was for the entire film and that it was just a misunderstanding. According to WELT information, five of the six suspects have a migration background.
Minister of Education announces consequences
Minister of Education Armin Schwarz reacted with dismay. “The incident is unbearable and has horrified us,” Schwarz told WELT. “It will be dealt with mercilessly and there will be consequences. Anti-Semitism and aggression once morest Jews are incompatible with our values.”

The headmaster “initiated an intensive review of the process” and all school committees were involved. The students would be excluded from attending school for two weeks. “The parents were informed immediately.” The students offered “the opportunity to apologize during an official visit to the Jewish community.” According to the public prosecutor’s office, those involved are likely to be subject to juvenile criminal law.
