TWO students who were victims of violence allegedly committed by law enforcement officers during a demonstration rejecting the revision of the Regional Election Law at the DPR RI Building, Senayan, on Thursday (22/8/2024) filed a complaint with Komnas HAM today.

The two students from the private university have the initials AR and ATB. They came accompanied by their legal counsel from the Indonesian Constitutional Guard Advocates Team.

The victim’s attorney and member of the Indonesian Constitutional Guard Advocate Team Syukur Destieli Gulo said that both of them complained about acts of violence allegedly committed by law enforcement officers. The acts of violence against his two clients were excessive. Moreover, his two clients did not commit anarchic acts at the time of the incident.

“Just conveying their aspirations and so on, then suddenly tear gas was thrown at them, then suddenly dragged, some were thrown and beaten with batons, then with clubs,” Syukur told reporters at the Komnas HAM Office, Jakarta, Thursday (29/8/2024).

“This is what we regret, people are defending their constitutional rights, people are maintaining the values of the rule of law but what is happening is discrimination from law enforcement officers,” he continued.

Regarding the complaint, he said he brought some evidence of the violence by the officers. The evidence includes photos and videos.
