Psychology students are angry and making their discontent heard. What are they denouncing? The establishment of a year of compulsory internship at the end of the five years of study. Without it, there is no question of graduates practicing their profession. A royal decree was put into force at the end of December, in the middle of the blockade, taking students off course.
“We have students who have had 5 years of study and who were surprised to have an extra year, but which is not applied in good conditions. There are not enough internship supervisors for all the students, there are not enough good conditions in relation to salary“, explains Emila Hoxhaj, President of the French-speaking Student Federation.
“We are not once morest this internship basically“, she adds, “On the other hand, what we are asking for is that there are good conditions and that we can really welcome all these graduates and that we can encourage these young people to go into professions that are essential for society.”.
To date, 84 supervisors have been approved while 1,873 graduates are expected this year in Belgium… The risk of a long-term shortage of mental health professionals is “even more worrying“, deplores the FEF.
Complete a compulsory internship, “characterized by a lack of space and without assessment of real mental health needs“, risk of “compromise the quality of care for the population“, affirms the federation. What is the solution ?
“For us, the solution is to postpone the internship until later when the internship supervisors can have all the sufficient information to request approval themselves, because you need to know that to be an internship supervisor, you must have approval. Except that most of the internship supervisors who are asked do not want to do it because there is vagueness“, explains Lucie Nicosia, general secretary of the general assembly of Louvain students.
A delegation of students met around 12:45 p.m. with the Minister of Health to negotiate with the latter the postponement of the internship; Mr. Vandenbroucke agreed to postpone it for two years. However, the proposal will still have to be submitted to the government soon.
