Protests erupted in Punjab’s capital Lahore after allegations of a female student being raped in the basement of the women’s campus of a private college surfaced.

However, the college administration, the police and the provincial government have said that no affected party has come forward and dismissed the reports as false information spread online.

Despite this denial, the student protest spread to Rawalpindi after Lahore, with students accusing the authorities of covering up the incident.

In response to the protest, Punjab’s education department and home department issued separate notifications on Thursday night, ordering closure of educational institutions and ban on public gatherings on Friday and Saturday.

Although the notifications did not specifically mention the protest against the alleged rape, the students said the shutdown was due to the protests.

Yesterday, there were violent protests in many cities of Punjab, in which there were clashes between students and police, windows of educational institutions were broken and school buses were set on fire.

While according to the administration, more than 380 people who participated in this protest have been arrested and the police is using CCTV footage to identify the protesters involved in the violence. Most of these protests are led by students.

The provincial government has insisted that the alleged incident of rape never happened, while Group Director of Private Colleges Arif Chaudhry also said in a press conference that no such incident happened.

Continuing to deny the reports, he announced that he would resign if the allegations were proven true.

On the other hand, the Chief Minister of the province Maryam Nawaz Sharif says that those who spread false news will be punished.

While the Punjab Police also asked the parents to keep a close watch on their children and keep them away from any illegal activities or else ‘criminal records may ruin the future of the students.’

Following yesterday’s protests in Rawalpindi, police personnel have been deployed at various locations across the city.

According to a police statement: ‘Police are fully prepared to deal with any law and order situation and vandalism or violation of law under the guise of protest is not acceptable under any circumstances.’

On the other hand, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf also called for a nationwide protest today, the aim of which is to protest against the possible constitutional amendment and the imprisonment of PTI founder chairman Imran Khan.

PTI leader and Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur in his video message has appealed to the people of every district and every city of Pakistan to leave their homes for peaceful protest on October 18.

He said in his message: ‘Tomorrow, everyone should come out against the release of Imran Khan and our other leadership and workers and the attitude towards them that they are not even being met and also against the unconstitutional amendment. And to raise the voice.’
