Student pilots insulted: KPÖ plus calls for a new speed limit

The student guides opposite the middle school in Lehen are a thing of the past. Cornelia Plank from the KPÖ plus is now afraid of accidents. As a step, your party is calling for a 30 km/h zone in this area.

Since 1964 there have been student guides at Schutzweg on Siebenstädterstrasse opposite the Lehen middle school. The school thus played a pioneering role throughout Austria. But in the recent past there has been an increasing number of insults from drivers towards the helping students. Therefore, in consultation with the police, the student pilots were abolished this school year, says teacher and school pilot coordinator Matthias Hofmarcher.

The situation affects around 900 students

The approximately 900 students from the middle school and the neighboring elementary school in Lehen are therefore once once more on their own on the protective route. Because the police don’t take on the role. “Since the student pilots left, there has been a gap in traffic safety here. There is also no police on the way to school. Does a child have to be hit first for the city politicians to react?” explains middle school teacher and KPÖ-plus candidate for the local council election, Cornelia Plank. There is a speed limit of 40 km/h on Siebenstädterstrasse.

Motion for a speed limit submitted

Since the student guides left, the teacher sees the safety of the students at risk when crossing the protective path. “That’s too much for a trip to school. A 30 km/h solution and regular speed controls are needed. If this is possible in other parts of the city, it must also be possible in Lehen,” said Plank. Your colleague Kay-Michael Dankl submitted a proposal for a 30 km/h limit in this area this year.

“No accidents on the way to school in this area since 2018”

But is this requirement so easy to implement? Probably not at the moment, as police press spokesman Hans Wolfgruber announced: “There have been no accidents on the way to school in this area since 2018. Of course, from a police perspective, a reduction in speed can prevent a potential risk of accidents.” However, discussions regarding gay rights police should take place beforehand. “That would be a simple and effective option to secure the protective route at least in the morning hours. However, this must be done at the school’s request to the responsible authority,” says press spokesman Wolfgruber. Only then can the police take action in this area.
