On Thursday, an Iraqi university decided to expel one of its students due to the circulation of a video in which she appeared wearing a picture of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on her graduation cap, which sparked widespread controversy in the country.
Al-Hurra’s correspondent reported that Al-Rafidain University College in Baghdad said in a statement that it had decided to “promote (write off) the student’s registration in the Department of Medical Laboratory Technology/Fourth Stage due to her violating the instructions and controls of the university campus.”
The statement added that the student “violated the controls and instructions by placing a dominant picture on the graduation cap during the graduation photo ceremony on March 6, 2024 on campus.”
Users on social media circulated a video clip that showed the student placing a picture of Saddam Hussein on top of her hat during her graduation ceremony from Al-Rafidain University College.
As a result, the university announced, “The student was referred to the investigative committee due to her involvement in committing a legal prohibition related to promoting the Baath regime.”
The constitution, which was approved in 2005 following the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime, prohibits the glorification of the Baath, and is punishable by imprisonment.
In 2016, the Iraqi Parliament approved a law banning the dissolved Baath Party and preventing it from returning to political activity under any name.
The law approved by the Iraqi Parliament punishes anyone who belongs to, glorifies or promotes the Baath Party with imprisonment for various periods of up to 15 years.
