A student died under the rubble when a boarding school building collapsed in Romania on Monday. This was reported by the media, citing the rescue team. The building suddenly collapsed for reasons that are still unclear, it said. Another student who was buried is in mortal danger. Two other students were only slightly injured.

A total of four teenagers between the ages of 15 and 17 were under the rubble. Canal work near the old building may have caused the collapse, explained district prefect Noemi Zörgö.

The institution belongs to the region’s renowned, now state high school “Tamasi Aron”, founded by Jesuits in the 16th century in Odorheiu Secuiesc, Transylvania, where the majority of ethnic Hungarians live. The school building was considered to be at low risk in the event of an earthquake, but was recently partially renovated. The boarding school was built at the beginning of the 20th century and, according to Prefect Zörgö, had a proper operating license. It was not checked whether there was a risk of earthquakes here. It belongs to the Catholic Church and was rented by the municipality.

In Romania, parents, teachers and politicians have been complaining regarding the poor state of the school infrastructure for years. There have often been allegations of negligence and bribery once morest building supervisory bodies.
