A student ate a $120,000 piece of art based on a banana. He says that he did not have breakfast so he was hungry.

An artwork called ‘Comedian’ by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan was exhibited at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul, South Korea.

Banana-eating student Noh Huyn-soo, a college student at Seoul National University, took the banana off the wall and after eating it, stuck the peel on the wall with the same tape that was attached to the banana. When asked by the museum authorities, the student said that he had not had breakfast and was feeling hungry.

Later, in an interview with local television station BS, the student said that ‘a work of modern art can also be called damage (a kind of) art.’

They said, ‘Wasn’t it taped so it could be eaten?’

After two or three days, the banana is changed at the direction of the artist Katilan. Cattelan reportedly said there was ‘no problem’ regarding the incident.

The artwork has been eaten before. In 2019, performance artist David Datona ate a banana. ‘Comedian’ sold for $120,000 (£95,600) at Art Basel in Miami. He later spoke about the incident on social media platform Instagram.

He said, ‘I like this art very much. It’s so delicious.’

He also defended his decision to eat the artwork, calling his act an act of art rather than an act of art damage.
