Principal Joe Powers was informed about the role by other students at the school. However, the principal’s response was not what they expected.

The principal told the students who approached him that the student was dressed as a communist-era German soldier. “I tried to explain the background of the uniform to the student who spoke to me, but the student may have told others that it was a 1940s uniform,” the principal explained in his note to staff.

But in a later email to parents, the principal said otherwise. He admitted that the situation should have been handled differently. He also mentioned that there was a difference of opinion among the staff members and the students about this. The principal admitted that the incident should have been handled more carefully and communicated more clearly. “This incident has affected many students and staff. “Intolerance, bigotry and biased behavior have no place in our school,” he said.

Following this, the school management announced that Powers had been removed from the position of principal and dismissed. The Chicago Teachers Union said this is not the first time parents, teachers and staff members have raised concerns about such a culture of intolerance at the school, and their complaints have never been addressed.
