Armstrong’s arrival in Vancouver was met with excitement. Signed as a Designated Player in September 2024, his contract, running through 2026, boasted a notable salary of $2,877,774. The midfielder quickly made his mark, especially during the Whitecaps’ stirring run in the MLS Cup playoffs.His contributions, including three goals, etched his name into vancouver’s recent history.

“It’s unclear how much of a factor the Whitecaps’ offseason coaching change or the franchise being put up for sale factored into Armstrong’s decision to return to the UK,” shares a source close to the player.

Despite the uncertainties, Armstrong’s departure from Vancouver signals a fulfilling chapter closing and a new adventure beginning.”My time with Vancouver was amazing. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to play in such a passionate environment and to be part of that playoff run was truly special,” Armstrong reflects. “MLS is a fantastic league with a lot of talented players.I learned a lot about the style of play and the culture of the league, which I think will benefit me moving forward.”

The move to Sheffield Wednesday, which materialized before the close of the English Championship transfer window on February 3rd, had been anticipated. Armstrong had been linked to several clubs, including West Bromwich Albion, Burnley, and his former club Southampton, further fueling speculation about his future.

“Sheffield Wednesday have got a fantastic fanbase and a real ambition to get back to the top flight,” Armstrong shares. “That’s somthing that realy appealed to me. I’ve always felt a connection with English football, and this prospect felt perfect, especially with everything they’ve got going for them right now.”

Speaking about his decision, Armstrong emphasizes, “With Sheffield Wednesday, I could just feel the pull. The city, the club’s history, and the ambition matched what I was looking for. Plus, Darren Moore, the manager, really sold me on his vision for the team and how he sees me fitting in.”

With a new chapter unfolding in his career, Armstrong sets his sights on achieving his personal goals with the Owls. “My ambition is to help the team achieve promotion back to the Premier League.That’s the ultimate goal,” he states.

As the Vancouver Whitecaps return from preseason training in Marbella on February 8th, eager to begin their new campaign, Armstrong’s departure marks a bittersweet moment for the club and its supporters.

Archyde sat down with the midfielder to discuss his reasons for returning to the UK, his experiences in MLS, and his ambitions with his new club.

Thank you for joining us, Stuart. It’s been a whirlwind few months for you, from signing with Vancouver to now moving to Sheffield Wednesday. Can you tell us a bit about what led to this decision?

“It’s been a really incredible journey. My time with Vancouver was amazing. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to play in such a passionate environment and to be a part of that playoff run was truly special. MLS is a fantastic league with a lot of talented players. I learned a lot about the style of play and the culture of the league, which I think will benefit me moving forward.however, when the opportunity arose to return to England and join a club with the ambition and history of Sheffield Wednesday, it felt like the right time for a new challenge.

Sheffield Wednesday has been linked with several players this transfer window. What was it about the Owls that notably attracted you?

How do you feel about stepping into a new league with a new team,knowing you’ll be facing high expectations? Do you think the experience you gained in MLS will be an asset?

“ I’m excited by the challenge. Every player wants to test themselves against the best, and the Championship is a tough and competitive league. The experience I gained in MLS will definately come in handy.The tempo and style of play are different, so adapting quickly will be important. But I’m confident I can make that transition and contribute to Sheffield Wednesday’s success.”

What are your personal goals for this upcoming season? And what would that promotion back to the Premier League mean to you?

“My ambition is to help the team achieve promotion back to the Premier League. That’s the ultimate goal. It would be a fantastic achievement for the club, the fans, and everyone involved. Playing in the Premier League is a dream for many footballers, and I want to experience that at the highest level. “
