The director of the Guatemalan Migration Institute, Stuard Rodríguez, issued a statement this Tuesday, March 26 in which he presents his “irrevocable” resignation to President Bernardo Arévalo.
Rodríguez, who did not mention the reasons for his resignation, He listed the progress that was achieved during his administration in immigration matters.
“Safe, orderly and regular migration management presents strong challenges to the region’s immigration authorities, challenges that during my administration were faced and overcome in favor of a more humane migration that adheres to legality,” the text says.
The official noted that During his administration, new passport issuing offices were opened, as well as the authorization of the Department of Recognition of Refugee Status and the Care Centers for Migrants.
He also highlighted the attention provided during the pandemic, the modernization of public immigration services and the implementation of information technologies, as well as the streamlining of procedures at regional borders such as in Honduras and El Salvador.
Rodríguez recalled that also during his administration the Migration Policy was created, “instrument that represents a milestone among the public policies of the State of Guatemala.”
Migration has been the focus of attention, mainly for irregularities in the acquisition of passport books, which caused its increase in price in recent years, as well as its shortage.
The country also faces an unprecedented wave of migration that has affected the entire region.
During his administration, Rodríguez made several reports on the increase in migrant expulsions, especially Cubans and Venezuelans.
