In Luxembourg: Vacations, meat, new furniture… impossible if they want to finish the month
LUXEMBOURG – A new survey, conducted by Statec, confirms on Tuesday the difficulties for many households in Luxembourg to make ends meet. Especially those who have children.

21.3% of households in Luxembourg say they have difficulty having the necessary budget to end the month, according to the results of a survey conducted by Statec and revealed on Tuesday. Unfortunately, the finding is not surprising and has already been mentioned recently, but this survey confirms the trend that material deprivation remains strong for some of the country’s inhabitants.
Inflation has swept away the average increase in household income, estimated in 2021 at 4,162 euros per person each month, while the poverty risk threshold is estimated at 2,265 euros. “Households with dependent children are those who have felt the worst regarding their financial situation”, writes the report, carried out over three months with 4,000 households.
Single adults with at least one dependent child are those who struggle the most to make ends meet, more than one in three (35.5%). A similar rate for a household made up of two adults with three or more dependent children (30.6%).
3.7% of people struggle to pay regular bills
To illustrate, Statec specifies that “in 2022, 19% of households in Luxembourg declared that they were unable to meet an unforeseen expense of 1,900 euros from their own resources”. And the situations of renunciation of certain goods or activities because of the budget are another lesson of the survey. 2.1% of the population faces rent arrears and 3.7% struggles to pay current bills. 17.5% of residents also consider that the burden of loans or credits is too high each month.
Among households having difficulty finishing the month, notes Statec, “more than half” might not replace worn-out furniture, “more than a third” might not afford a week’s vacation away from home and “10%” have abandoned the idea of regularly buying meat or fish. The at-risk-of-poverty rate now stands at 17.3% of the population in Luxembourg.
