Struggles of a Central Defender: Exploring Matthijs de Ligt’s Role and Challenges in the Team

The central defender has only played 36 minutes this season; two weeks ago he was only allowed to play for a minute – in the six position. In the top duel once morest the Werkself, he replaced Konrad Laimer five minutes before the end, but once more had to play in defensive midfield.

Confronted with his “new” role in the mixed zone following the game, de Ligt explained: “You have to ask the coach. I do what the coach wants. I played in midfield when I was younger. Sometimes it’s not bad to play somewhere else.”

The 24-year-old is not too happy with his current situation. “I haven’t played that much in the last four games. That’s football. Of course it’s not that nice, but ultimately it’s the coach’s decision.”

Did coach Thomas Tuchel explain to him why there isn’t enough for the starting eleven at the moment? “No, he hasn’t explained that to me yet. But I don’t think it’s necessary.”

Netherlands as an oasis of well-being: “It was nice”

Things went differently for de Ligt during the international break. During Elftal’s important European Championship qualifying victory in Ireland (2-1), the former Juventus defender was on the pitch for the full distance.

“It was nice to play 90 minutes once more and win,” he said and added meaningfully: “It’s always good to be important for the team. That was a while ago.”

When asked what adjustments he might make to fight his way back into the team, de Ligt replied: “I can only do my job on the pitch. I can’t do anything more.”

De Ligt moved from the Bianconeri to Munich in the summer of 2022. He has a total of 48 competitive games to his name.
