Struble Seeks Consistency, Dach Finding His Groove
Montreal Canadiens coach Martin St-Louis expects more from Jayden Struble, even though he recognizes the young defenseman’s potential. St-Louis wants Struble to find a higher floor in his game, achieving a consistent level of performance.
“He has to find the right balance, he has to raise his floor,” St-Louis stated. “When he’s good, he’s very good, but his threshold is too low at the moment. He needs to add that little something extra to his game and be on from the first shift.”
St-Louis believes this consistency issue might be mental, acknowledging that everyone approaches the game differently. He emphasizes the importance of urgency, alertness, and recognizing the impact of every play.
“For me, you have to be constantly in a hurry, be alert because every play counts. From your first presence, a little bit can affect the outcome of the match, so I would like him to increase his level of urgency from the start of the match.”
While Struble strives for consistency, Kirby Dach appears to be making strides after missing almost the entire previous season. Despite not registering a point in the last four games and a -5 differential, St-Louis maintains optimism about Dach’s progress.
“He’s starting to see things more clearly. It hasn’t translated into performance yet, but I think he’s on the path to getting there,” St-Louis said Friday. “It doesn’t happen overnight, but it’s coming.”
Dach appears more comfortable alongside linemates Josh Anderson and Joshua Roy. He looked solid during Friday’s practice, prompting hope that his resurgence is imminent.
