Strong storms are moving through the Czech Republic. Cloud bursts hit Olomouc

“The strongest storms are currently located in Olomouc. They are moving slowly in an eastern direction,” meteorologists said before 3 p.m., adding that in some places it had rained around 15 millimeters in ten minutes.

“The midday sounding from Prostějov indicates a very moist atmospheric profile and slightly more available energy than predicted by the models,” said the ČHMÚ.

Other strong storms also swept over Prague and central and eastern Bohemia.

Current radar data and Aladin model simulated forecast for the afternoon. Thunderstorms are indicated by hatching.

Friday’s weather is affected by low pressure. Meteorologists predict that strong thunderstorms may occur in the eastern half of the territory, which will be accompanied by torrential rain totaling around 30 millimeters and stronger gusts of wind.

The warning will cover the Moravian-Silesian, Zlín, Olomouc and Pardubice regions as well as parts of the Vysočina, South Moravian, Hradec Králové and Liberec regions and will be in effect from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

On Friday, meteorologists expect showers or rain in most areas. “The cloud cover will be mostly heavy at first and it should gradually decrease in the afternoon and evening together with precipitation from the southwest,” stated the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ).

However, Thursday’s situation should not be repeated, when 144 millimeters of rain fell in Kubova Huta in Šumava, while 109 millimeters of precipitation fell in a single hour.

Even the original warning against heavy rainfall in the north of the country will not be fulfilled. The updated models do not predict significant precipitation that would require the issuance of a warning.

“The area of expected high totals has moved north outside of our territory, so the heavy rain warning has been cancelled. Only in our northernmost areas (Šluknovský and Frýdlantský víběžek) can it rain around 30 millimeters during showers and rain,” the meteorologists added.
