Lima.-A magnitude 7 earthquake was recorded in the early hours of Friday, June 28, in the department of Arequipa, according to information provided by the Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP) on its official channels.
The quake occurred at 12:36 am and its epicenter was located in the sea, 54 kilometers southwest of the Yauca district, in the province of Caravelí.
The IGP also detailed that the earthquake on Friday, June 28 had a depth of 42 kilometers and had an intensity of grade VI in the Yauca district.
Speaking to RPP, the IGP’s executive president, Hernando Tavera, revealed more details regarding the earthquake that occurred in Arequipa:
“This earthquake, although it was quite shallow, was quite far from the coast, so it only caused a fairly intense shaking of the ground, which alerted the population and caused them to leave their homes, which is normal,” he said.
Minutes following the earthquake in Arequipa, the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation of the Peruvian Navy reported that the earthquake generated a tsunami alert on the Peruvian coast.
This, following carrying out an analysis and evaluation through the National Tsunami Warning Center.
Social media users reported that the tremor with its epicenter in Arequipa was also felt in the departments of Ica and Lima.
“Here in Pisco (Ica) the tremor was quite strong, the neighbors came out scared thinking it was something similar to what happened in the past,” a citizen told RPP Noticias by telephone.
The IGP reported that a new earthquake of magnitude 4.2 was recorded at 01:10 am with an epicenter 49 kilometers south of the district of Lomas, in the province of Caravelí, in Arequipa.
This new movement had a depth of 35 kilometers and was recorded with an intensity III in the district of Lomas.
At 1:26 am, a new followingshock of magnitude 4 was recorded with an epicenter 39 kilometers south of the district of Yauca, in the province of Caravelí, in Arequipa.
The IGP detailed that this new earthquake was recorded with an intensity III in the aforementioned Arequipa district.El Comercio.
