Eight people suffered minor injuries after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit a strait in western Japan on Wednesday, which did not trigger a tsunami warning, authorities and Japanese media said.
The initial report is of injuries that were not particularly serious, mostly due to falls, and minor damage.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located near the port of Uajima, in the Bungo Strait, which separates the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, and the focal depth was about 25 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey.
Japan’s meteorological and seismological agency JMA reported an earthquake of magnitude 6.4 and a focal depth of 50 kilometers.
“In locations where the earthquake was most felt, do not approach danger zones. There is no danger of a tsunami,” JMA said via X, after the main tremor, recorded at 11:14 p.m. (local time; 5:14 p.m. Greece time).
Japan’s Nuclear Safety Authority (NRA) said for its part that the Ikata nuclear power plant, located in the area, is operating normally. “No anomaly was detected” at the plant, he reassured.
