Strike in the health network: nearly 1,000 operations postponed

The nurses’ strike on Wednesday and Thursday will cause the postponement of around a thousand non-urgent surgical procedures, says the Minister of Health, Christian Dubé.

The Quebec Interprofessional Health Federation began the first of its two-day walkout of its approximately 80,000 members on Wednesday.

However, the law on essential services provides that a large part of activities must continue: 70% for operating services and 80% in subspecialized centers.

“I would say it is fortunate that we have our private clinics to be able to carry out operations because it would be much more difficult than that,” declared Minister Dubé upon his arrival in the parliamentary committee.

Including the common front strike on Monday, the delay in non-urgent surgical interventions this week amounts to nearly 1,000 operations, the minister calculates.

“It sure doesn’t help with the waiting lists,” he says.

“I will remind you that, until now, we followed our program, particularly for those who are more than a year old,” he added.

In the wake of the pandemic, Quebec has entrusted many operations to private clinics, in order to reduce its waiting lists. “My solution is really our private clinics. Our private clinics are not on strike. Our private clinics are able to take the room to maneuver,” underlines Christian Dubé.
