Strike extended for 53 days… Why does CJ Logistics refuse to talk to couriers?

It is the 53rd day of the strike by the CJ Logistics courier union.

The issue is whether the social consensus to prevent overwork deaths is being followed.

As CJ is refusing to negotiate with the union, there is no dialogue to resolve this conflict.

The strike by courier workers is protracted.

“Come to the conversation to resolve it.”

After the corona virus hit in 2020, 22 courier workers died from overwork.

In order to prevent overwork, the labor union and the government made a social agreement in June last year.

It was decided to reduce working hours by putting a separate manpower into sorting, the main culprit of overwork, and to use it to improve treatment by raising the delivery price by 170 won.

But the union insists that the agreement is not being followed.

“My fee has been increased, so I should have it, but there is nothing that touches my skin, so I’m insisting that you check it out.”

Courier drivers are still sorting by hand from early in the morning.

In a survey conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, it was found that only 28% of parcel workers were completely absent from sorting.

Another main culprit of overwork pointed out by the union.

Unlike other courier companies, CJ Korea Express implements the same-day delivery principle and a 6-day workweek system.

“If you look at those who died from overwork, they think that most of the reasons are same-day delivery. It’s a toxin clause. Only CJ Korea Express put that clause in the standard contract once more.”

The biggest problem is that there is no dialogue itself to resolve these conflicts.

Courier drivers are specially hired workers who are not properly protected by labor laws.

CJ Logistics says they are not users and is not responding to negotiations.

In June of last year, the Central Labor Relations Commission ruled that CJ Logistics had an obligation to negotiate as the principal employer.

Although he did not directly sign a labor contract, he saw that he had the substantive authority and responsibility to determine the working conditions.

However, the company was dissatisfied with this decision and filed a lawsuit.

“We are really courier workers who are wearing CJ Logistics uniforms and using the CJ Logistics app to deliver boxes with the CJ Logistics logo to our customers…”

CJ Logistics said, “We put in far more manpower and equipment for sorting than other courier companies, and the principle of same-day delivery is for consumers, and we do not exceed 60 hours a week.”

CJ Korea Express’s operating profit in the parcel delivery division last year was KRW 198.3 billion. It was an all-time high.
