Micarna employees in Ecublens (VD) have started a strike to protest once morest the closure of the site, announced for spring 2025. The Unia union is demanding that management sit down at the negotiating table.
“The staff had summoned management to begin negotiations at 5:00 a.m., the time their day begins, but management refused dialogue,” Noé Pelet, head of Unia’s industry sector, explained to Keystone on Thursday. ATS. “A communication from management was planned for 9:00 a.m., but it did not take place. The decision to go on strike was voted on at 9:15 a.m..”
The Micarna site in Ecublens has 84 employees. Its restructuring provides for the elimination of all of these positions.
Unia accuses Micarna management of having “violated legal provisions” regarding the announcement of collective redundancies. According to the union, when the closure of the site was announced, no announcement of restructuring was made beforehand to the Vaud cantonal authorities and no consultation of the staff concerned was organized.
“Blocking”
The employees also denounce the management’s “blocking attitude” and demand that the latter begin “the necessary urgent negotiations.” Unia specifies that Micarna and Migros Industrie have refused all proposals for dialogue since the announcement of the closure of the site.
The union also deplores that Migros does not recognize the mandates given by its staff to the unions. Regarding working conditions, Unia further observes that “staff do not know what time work ends, and that days last up to 14 hours in a row.”
Contacted in the morning, Migros and Micarna had not yet responded to Keystone-ATS’ questions.
The Migros group, parent company of Micarna, currently has five factories dedicated to the processing of fresh meat. According to an analysis by the orange giant, sites like Courtepin (FR) or Schönbühl (BE) offer better conditions for the future than Ecublens.
