Staff at London Gatwick Airport in England will strike for eight days this summer. They want more wages, and that can also affect Dutch travelers.
Nearly a thousand employees of check-in counters and baggage handlers, among others, are taking part in the strike, the Unite union says. The strike is from July 28 to August 1 and from August 4 to 8.
Flights can be delayed or even canceled altogether. EasyJet flies between Gatwick and Schiphol, so travelers to and from the Netherlands may also be affected by the strike.
Furthermore, there are mainly flights to southern Europe from the English airport. Airlines Ryanair, TUI, British Airways, Westjet and Wizz also fly to Gatwick.
The workers want higher wages. The majority earn an average of less than 12 pounds (regarding 14 euros) per hour, Unite writes in a statement. Many companies at Gatwick Airport have cut salaries during the corona pandemic.
There have also been large-scale layoffs and working conditions have deteriorated, the union says. It has been negotiating with four companies at the airport since January.
There is already a strike in Italy on Saturday. Ita Airways has already canceled at least 133 flights. Many cancellations are also expected from other carriers.
