All flights departing from Charleroi airport scheduled for Tuesday were canceled due to action by security personnel. Activity resumed normally this Wednesday.
Flights resumed normally this Wednesday, departing from Charleroi airport, the day after a security strike which had paralyzed takeoffs.
The departures notice board available on the Brussels South Charleroi Airport (BSCA) website did not report any cancellations this Wednesday morning, noted Belga. The first flight scheduled for 6:25 a.m., operated by Ryanair to Ibiza, left on time.
Why were flights departing from Charleroi airport canceled?
Tuesday, due to action by the security sector and the lack of staff to ensure security operations, all flights departing from the airport had been canceled. On the other hand, all arrivals initially planned for Tuesday were maintained. In total, some 16,000 passengers were impacted by the strike, according to the boss of BSCA, Philippe Verdonck.
No other disturbance did not take place at the airports of Liège or Zaventem.
Several strikes in 2 months
Around 450 people, according to figures from the Brussels police, gathered Tuesday afternoon in Brussels, in front of the offices of Arxia, the professional federation of the private security sector, during a demonstration organized by the common union front of the security guard sector. The demonstrators denounced a “blocked” social consultation and demanded improvement in their working conditions.
“Employers respect neither social dialogue in general, nor the union representatives who try to express discontent on the ground in particular,” say the unions.
This strike comes shortly after a previous action carried out “as a united front” by airport staff in mid-September. Unions denounced work overload imposed on employees, difficult relations with management, mainly human resources management and a deleterious atmosphere.
