Noisy protest

“Stop Micarna” and “Solidarity with the Micarna strikers” loudly replied the Unia employees and unionists gathered in front of the main Migros store in the city center, before making a brief foray into the corridors of the complex. According to the union, other protests were held in Yverdon, Renens, Vevey, Geneva and Neuchâtel, in particular. And a strike picket remained present on site, in Ecublens.

For several days, Unia has demanded to be included at the negotiating table and recalls that it was mandated “by almost all” of the staff concerned. In his eyes, “the benefits provided to support employees are largely insufficient,” Arnaud Bouverat, union secretary, explained to Keystone-ATS. Tuesday morning, the staff voted to renew the strike, which is “very well followed” according to the union.

Migros, for its part, explains that employees’ demands “can be met within the framework of the social plan put in place”. Individual solutions are provided for special cases and emergency cases. If discussions remain blocked, Migros plans to call on a mediator. Migros plans to close the Micarna site in Ecublens in April 2025. The objective is to consolidate the production of fresh meat on a smaller number of sites, including that of Courtepin (FR). Some 85 jobs are threatened in Ecublens.
