The frequency of checks will be increased and zero tolerance will remain applicable for speeding on the roads of Walloon Brabant, the prosecution announced on Monday.
As part of the “Slow down” road safety campaign which concerns the whole of Wallonia, fixed speed cameras and section speed cameras have been carrying out reinforced speed limit checks since 15 March. “In Walloon Brabant, this operation is an extension of the measures taken for several months to raise awareness of strict compliance with speed limits,” said Magali Raes, spokesperson for the prosecution.
In July 2022, the section radar installed on the A7/E19 motorway between Nivelles and Braine-le-Château (direction Brussels) was set to record all speeding violations.
In February 2023, during the “Light foot” campaign, fixed speed cameras in the province of Walloon Brabant switched to zero tolerance mode. During the launch of the regional “Slow down” operation, the installation of a section radar reinforced the system on the N25.
“All the automatic control means of Walloon Brabant will now be used to apply zero tolerance: fixed and mobile radars, section radars, as well as Lidar devices”, warns Magali Raes.
Beyond 1 to 30 km/h of the speed limit an immediate collection of 80 € to 400 €, depending on the seriousness of the overrun, may be required.
As for overruns of more than 30 km/h, they will systematically give rise to a direct summons to the police court.
During 2022, 14 people were killed and 970 injured on the roads of Walloon Brabant.
According to the first figures available from the “Slow down” operation, 6,341 speeding cases were recorded in Walloon Brabant.
“Most of the findings gave rise to immediate perceptions. Only 8 drivers would be directly concerned by a direct summons to the police court. It would therefore seem that these successive campaigns have a real impact on unsuitable speeds, but it will only be at the beginning of the year 2024 that more definitive lessons can be learned”, further specifies the prosecution.
