The following is the full text of President Yoon’s memorial service on Memorial Day.
Respected Koreans, 2.4 million veterans’ families and people of national merit, we celebrated the 67th Memorial Day. Here at the Seoul National Cemetery, the martyrs who fought for the independence of the Republic of Korea, the heroic spirits who defended the Republic of Korea from aggression by communists, and those who sacrificed their lives to protect the lives of the people are sleeping together. We pay our respects to all those who have made noble sacrifices for our country and bow our heads in prayer. I also extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families who have cherished the pain of losing their family for many years.
The freedom and peace we enjoy now might be protected by the courage of the martyrs and the heroes of the country who sacrificed for their country. Nothing can fully repay the courage that is hotter than life. We believe that making a proud Republic of Korea where freedom, democracy and human rights are more alive is the way to make their sacrifices shine. The sacrifices of our heroes should no longer lead to the tears of the families left behind. If it was the hero’s mission to protect the security of the country and the safety of the people, it is the duty of the state to take care of the families left behind. We will treat the people of national merit and their bereaved families more warmly. A solid veterans system is the basis of a strong national defense force. We will prepare a fair and reasonable veterans system so that there are no unjust persons.
Fellow Koreans, even at this very moment, North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats are on the rise. Yesterday, several types of ballistic missiles were also launched. North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missiles are reaching a level that threatens peace not only on the Korean Peninsula, but also in Northeast Asia and the world. Our government will respond decisively and sternly to any provocations from North Korea. While deterring North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, we will continue to equip ourselves with more fundamental and practical security capabilities. We will make sure that there is no gap in protecting the lives and property of our people.
There are those who sacrificed themselves on the forefront of national security and public safety with us now. In January, the late Major Sim Jeong-min of the 10th Fighter Wing of the Air Force died without letting go of the control stick until the end to prevent a fighter jet from going down toward a private house. , the late Fire Chief Park Soo-dong, the late Fire Bridge Jo Woo-chan, and the Southern Regional Coast Guard Air Corps who died in a crash while searching for a missing ship in Taiwanese waters. It was their dream to protect the heroes. On behalf of the people, I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families.
The people of a country that has achieved freedom and prosperity have sincerely respected those who sacrificed and devoted themselves for their country. We will make a country where heroes in uniform are respected. Because of them, our people can safely and comfortably pursue their dreams and happiness.
Fellow Koreans, we now have a mission to nurture and pass down a more free and peaceful Republic of Korea to our descendants. A great Republic of Korea that pursues the values of freedom, democracy and human rights will make the sacrifices of those who dedicated themselves to the country worthwhile. The courage of our heroes will be remembered forever in the name of the nation. The government and people of the Republic of Korea will work together so that pride and pride can blossom in the hearts of the bereaved families. thank you
