Strict Prohibition on Bicycles, Scooters, and Rollerblades in Josaphat Park: Protecting Pedestrians and Finding a Balance

The ban is not new… but needed a reminder, according to Alderman Deborah Lorenzino (Challenge). New signs have been put up in the Josaphat park in Schaerbeek: bicycles, scooters and rollerblades are strictly prohibited.

“It’s not new. Before, there was a certain tolerance because it was manageable. But there was an exaggeration. Pedestrians can be put in danger, uncomfortable, jostled… But we must protect the weakest users”, comments the agent who says that he has received many complaints from pedestrians.

”It’s not a bike hunt. On the contrary, we support cyclists. But the park must remain welcoming for all. We have to find a balance, and there was a need to remember the rule.

Children under 11 can still ride in the park

On social networks, some are indignant at the measure, which would penalize children in learning. A criticism that thwarts the alderwoman Challenge. “The ban affects those over the age of 11. Small children can therefore still learn to ride in the park.”

Pieter Fannes of the association Heroes For Zero, an activist for more road safety, says he understands the ban. “When kids are learning to ride, an adult shouldn’t run next to them with an e-bike.” The Schaerbeekois however regrets the ambiguity of the sign, which does not specify that the ban does not apply to children under 11 years old. This can deter families. “Many children learn to ride at the Josaphat park. There is indeed no pedestrian street in Schaerbeek, many roads are paved…”

The ban on riding a bicycle also applies in the other green spaces of the Cité des Ânes, such as the Hamoir park and the Terdelt park. But fewer complaints are registered, indicates the municipality.
