When I recently, a good three months following the release, saw the debut of STREVELLNA was asked not to look for the musicians behind the project, but to let the songs work first. Well-behaved as I am, I did that, but given the quality of this great debut called “Aldrigheten” (German: Age), I was of course curious. But there were no well-known musicians to be found like those WARKINGS or other secret all-star bands, but a gentleman named Magnus Larnhed, who worked for the bands 59 TIMES THE PAIN and THE PRODUCTS, which were previously completely unknown to me, and is responsible for vocals and guitar. So not an all-star band, but a kind of mastermind story? It’s hard to say at the moment because I don’t know who else is involved, but it doesn’t really matter anyway.
The album starts excitingly with a short intro and then gets off to a brilliant start. Despite the rockier riffing, the opener is reminiscent of retro bands like SKULL FIST or ENFORCER, which is also due to Magnus’ soulful voice. But what’s special regarding the project is that various other genres are mixed in here. Some melodic rock there, a few heavy riffs that are strong METALLICA memories, coupled with catchy choruses, countless hooks and catchy parts, make this work something very special. And everything comes together wonderfully and in flowing transitions. In addition, the catchy parts are not a given, as the work was sung entirely in Swedish.
For me, alongside the opener “Strevellna”, “Vi” is certainly a real highlight. A heavy metal anthem with AIRBOURNE-Riffs and a chorus that… DREAM EVIL remembered and just doesn’t want to leave the ear canal anymore. Even if the ballad is not entirely Black Album material, it is also a small highlight of this album, full of hits and hymns that grab you immediately and don’t let go so quickly. We can only hope that Magnus and his group behind STREVELLNA get the attention they need and go on tour soon.
