Streptococci: are they contagious?
While group B streptococci can be found on the skin of many people without causing symptoms, group A streptococci are sometimes very contagious. How much depends on the type of infection.
Strep throat is usually transmitted through direct and indirect contact with an infected person. The pathogens are passed on, for example, when speaking, coughing and sneezing, but also via contaminated objects. Skin infections such as impetigo contagiosa result from direct skin contact.
The incubation period, i.e. the time from infection to the onset of the first symptoms, is usually one to three days.
Can a streptococcal infection be prevented?
You cannot prevent an illness. However, it is possible to minimize the risk of infection by washing your hands thoroughly and avoiding contact with infected people whenever possible.
There is a vaccination once morest pneumococci.
Streptococci: How long contagious?
If left untreated, a person infected with streptococcus is contagious for up to three weeks. In the case of skin infections and purulent excretions, it can be even longer.
If antibiotics are given, the person concerned is no longer contagious within 24 hours.
