Strengthening Reception for Asylum Seekers: The Positive Impact of Municipal Initiatives

In order to create more places for asylum seekers, the Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Nicole de Moor (CD&V) intends to strengthen reception in the municipalities.

Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration Nicole de Moor (CD&V) went to the town of Amay on Wednesday followingnoon to congratulate the local authorities for their work in welcoming asylum seekers. The opportunity for it to reaffirm its support for municipalities and Local Reception Initiatives (ILA) which have “real value”, she believes.

“To provide additional places, we have to be creative and consider different hosting options. In recent years, we have made it more interesting for cities and municipalities to take their own initiatives. We will continue on this path with a new action plan. The example of Amay shows the positive impact that municipalities can have in creating reception places“, she explained.

Amay currently recognizes 22 places in ILA, “while the municipality is in financial difficulty and under a management plan”, recalled its mayor Jean-Michel Javaux, who hopes that his policy will be emulated elsewhere in the country. “Welcoming is a wealth for human groups. We see people who have experienced difficulties, the war. For these people, the follow-up is better than in centers. We are convinced that this is the right solution“, he launched.

Amay is part of a long list of cities and towns with such squares. No less than 500 municipalities have such initiatives. All of the local reception initiatives represent 6,597 additional placeswhich are added to the collective reception places in the asylum centers managed by Fedasil and other partners.

With the migration agreement approved by the Council of Ministers at second reading in July, Secretary of State de Moor is committed to strengthening this type of reception. Its action plan will give more certainty to municipalities with ILAs and more financial aid. They will soon be informed of the changes.
