The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), one of 27 research institutes in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the United States, has the primary mission of better understanding the interactions between the environment and human health. On the occasion of the visit, on 22 March 2017, of an ANSES delegation to the NIEHS at Research Triangle Park (North Carolina), Linda Birnbaum, Director of the NIEHS and Director of the National Toxicology Program (NTP) and Roger Genet, Director General of ANSES, signed a memorandum of understanding for a period of 10 years.
This agreement aims to develop, within the framework of their respective missions and while respecting their independence, enhanced scientific and technical cooperation between the two organisations, thus contributing to a better understanding and prevention of the impacts of the environment on human health. through research and the acquisition of new knowledge.
ANSES and the NIEHS have already collaborated in the past, particularly on endocrine disruptors, in particular bisphenol A, or cleavage fragments. The two institutes are also interested in subjects such as the potential health effects of atypical working hours on health, or even radiofrequencies.
The NIEHS also hosts the National Toxicology Program (NTP), supported by several US federal agencies, aimed at mobilizing public funding for large-scale health studies of public interest on subjects marked by a lack of scientific knowledge. Its main mission is to assess agents (chemical, biological, physical) of importance in public health, through the development and implementation of innovative tools in toxicology and molecular biology.
During its visit, the ANSES delegation expressed its strong interest in this federal program which has no equivalent in France and Europe. ANSES, which has already recommended in the past the creation of an inter-agency fund dedicated to carrying out large-scale studies and research aimed at consolidating knowledge on health and environmental risks, which are insufficiently documented and marked by a particularly acute societal expectation in terms of independent public research, will continue to plead for the establishment of such a program at European level.
