It was on the sidelines of the regional programming and strategy workshop for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) – French-speaking Africa that a strong delegation went to Pandiénou, a locality located in the municipality of Pambal in the region of Thiès, to see firsthand the results of a project aimed at improving the food security and nutrition of communities through the development of livelihoods resilient to the effects of climate change.

Welcomed by administrative and local authorities, FAO experts and beneficiaries of the projects visited, Chizuru AOKI, Chief Environmental Specialist / Manager, LDCF / SCCF was delighted with the welcome and the fact of seeing a replica of a project funded by his institution. “It is impressive to see how these populations adapt to the climatic reality. We will do all we can to help them adapt to this new climate reality,” said Jason Spensley, GEF Climate Change Adaptation Officer. These populations mentioned are mainly women united in the Economic Interest Grouping (EIG) “And Liggeey de Pandiénou” who have benefited from the support of the SAGA-Senegal project, the objective of which is to strengthen the resilience of populations in the face of change. for food security and nutrition in Haiti and Senegal. The school field serves as an application area for the women of the group.

According to the president of the GIE, Cécile Penda Mbaye, the new agricultural techniques acquired and tested in this field school have enabled us to have very good harvests and to improve our living conditions.

“In this perimeter, we use the SAI method which allows us to save water, to cultivate in all seasons. We use compost as a ferment and we only harvest organic products. We are more than a hundred women and we want more land to develop our activity,” added Cécile Penda Mbaye. “Here, in Pandiénou, it is a project funded by the Government of Quebec to the tune of 5,000,000 Dollars which has adopted and capitalized on the field-school approach that we have developed in the “Climate Resilience Project” which is in the process of scaling up,” emphasized Makhfouss SARR, Assistant to the FAO Representative, Program Officer.

He explained that the Climate Resilience Project which is being replicated is financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) from the funds intended for the least developed countries (LDCs) for an amount of 2 million dollars.
