  • The objective of this measure is to avoid obstruction of vehicular traffic, according to the Mayor of the José María García municipality.

Authorities on Margarita Island, in the state of Nueva Esparta, issued a decree on August 28 banning street vending in the framework of the Virgen del Valle festivities that will take place on September 8.

Cruz Clairet, mayor of the José María García municipality, established in the document distributed on Instagram the prohibition of these activities in religious areas and spaces where cultural activities will be held.

The regulations include the prohibition of the sale of food, alcoholic beverages, religious articles in the streets, as well as the installation of kiosks that may obstruct pedestrian traffic during the religious festivities.

What other implications does the decree have?

In addition to street vending, authorities have also limited the hours for loading and unloading merchandise on the island. This activity will be allowed between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.

However, on September 8, the Day of the Virgin of the Valley, the loading and unloading of merchandise is prohibited. For this reason, merchants were urged to take precautions.

Likewise, the Mayor of José María García prohibited vehicular traffic from September 8 to September 11 in the area around the Santiago Mariño plaza, because the activities will be held at the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Valley.

The only ones exempt from this regulation are security forces and citizens who live or own businesses in the surrounding areas of that sector.
