Gints Zilbalodis: The inspiration came from my deep connection to nature and my concern for the planet. I’ve always been fascinated by the delicate balance between humanity and the natural world. Gints Zilbalodis: Thank you! The visual style was a collaborative effort with my astonishing team. We wanted to create something that felt both timeless and modern, blending customary animation techniques with cutting-edge technology.

The world of Flow is lush and vibrant, with a focus on natural landscapes. We spent countless hours studying real-world environments—forests, rivers, mountains—to capture their essence. The goal was to make the audience feel immersed in this world,to almost feel the wind,hear the rustling leaves,and sense the life pulsating around them.

We also paid close attention to lighting and color palettes to evoke specific emotions. For instance, warmer tones are used during moments of hope and connection, while cooler tones reflect challenges and introspection. It’s all about creating an emotional journey through visuals.

Archyde: The film’s music, composed by Rihards Zaļupe, has been praised for its emotional depth. How did you collaborate to ensure the score complemented the story?

Gints Zilbalodis: Rihards is a genius, and working with him was an absolute pleasure. From the begining, we knew the music had to be more than just background—it had to be a character in itself, guiding the audience through the emotional highs and lows of the story.

We spent a lot of time discussing the themes and emotions of each scene. Rihards would often create drafts based on early storyboards, and we’d refine them together. the score blends orchestral elements with natural sounds, like birdsong and flowing water, to create a sense of harmony and connection. It’s a testament to Rihards’ talent that the music feels so integral to the film’s identity.

Archyde: Flow has been nominated for a Golden Globe and is also in contention for a BAFTA and an Oscar. What do these accolades mean for Latvian cinema?
