Strawberry season: a sweet stop in Estanzuela and Areguá

Asuncion, IP Agency.- Strawberry season is here and any excuse is valid to deviate from the path that connects Areguá with Ypacaraí. The Patiño strawberry season, located on the border between Areguá and Itaguá, comes alive with around 40 vendors who celebrate the good weather and the harvest with a varied offer of products derived from this delicious fruit.

At the stalls, visitors can find a wide variety of strawberry-based products. One of the vendors told us that during this time, fresh strawberries are the preferred choice for shoppers. However, among the available options are:

– Strawberry ice cream.
– Strawberry cakes and biscuits.
– Piononos and alfajores filled with strawberry jam.
– Strawberry liqueurs.
– Strawberry lollipops without additives.
– Fruit and strawberry salads with chantilly.
– Strawberry seedlings for home cultivation.

During this season, strawberries become the star attraction that attracts drivers to make a mandatory stop. Currently, the price is around 50,000 Gs. per kilo. It is expected that, with the increase in production and harvest, the price of this tempting fruit will decrease.

Growth of strawberry production in Paraguay

In recent years, strawberry production in Paraguay has experienced significant growth, reaching some 400 hectares under cultivation. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the leading departments in production are Central, with 218 hectares; Caaguazú with 109; Alto Paraná with 20; Paraguarí with 18; Concepción with 14; Cordillera with 10; San Pedro with 8; and Guairá and Itapúa, with 5 hectares each.

In the area between Areguá and Ypacaraí there are approximately 350 producers, who together cultivate about 60 hectares of strawberries. This region is especially productive thanks to the favorable microclimate provided by Lake Ypacaraí. The vendors are eagerly awaiting this weekend to offer their delicious strawberries to visitors.
